The name Mustang

Executive stylist John Najjar, was a big fan of the World War II fighter plane the P-51 Mustang. Najjar, along with fellow Ford stylist Philip T. Clark, designed the first prototype of the Ford Mustang, known as the "Ford Mustang I". The Mustang I made its formal debut at the United States Grand Prix at Watkins Glen, New York, on October 7, 1962, where a test driver drove the second "race" prototype around the track during a demonstration.
